SUCCESS STORY

Pule grew up without a father. Living in the city of Johannesburg with his mom was not easy. His mother was an alcoholic who didn't talk much, she never taught him what was important in life or what values to cling to.

"I didn't really have a relationship with my mom. Then she got very ill and I had to take care of her myself. I had to do all the cooking, I washed her, everything. I stopped going to school for a year and a half. At the age of thirteen I began to stay at a shelter for street children during the week and weekends I would go home. When I was fourteen I came home one night and found my mom worse than ever. I wanted to call the neighbours, but I knew if I left she might die alone. So I stayed. I held her and watched her die in my arms."

Now Pule was homeless and he moved to the shelter permanently. He was very sad but acted like he didn't care. He was even rebellious at times.

Then he heard about Karos and Kambro and the choir and he wanted to join. Karos and Kambro was the only activity after school and it sounded like fun. Soon Karos and Kambro became a place of belonging for Pule, a big family, like the one he didn't have.

Karos and Kambro gave Pule a new perspective on life. He realised for the first time that he could have his own dream. He always wanted to fulfil his mother's dream and his promise to her to finish school, which he did.

Today Pule is one of the top facilitators of Karos & Kambro, he has two sons and he is determined to follow his dream..

Karos & Kambro has made itself worthy to us. It has developed us mentally and spiritually through leadership and art itself. It has changed the way we think about our future as individuals. This project has given people a whole lot of hope and it's not just about helping other people emotionally, it's about helping others realize that they can help other people while they're in a process of healing themselves. By that I am helping two people in the same time and they are helping another two in the process. I personally believe that Karos & Kambro could be the miracle that this country needs if it could only expand and reach to other parts of this country that it has never touched before. For this project to grow and follow the dream that it started with, it needs people who share the same dream. People who will be able to carry this dream with the same passion as the person who started this dream . . .
